As the oldest living city in the world, #Varanasi is believed to have been inhabited since the 20th century. The legend of the city itself dates back to 10,000 years and is the historic setting for many Hindu scriptures. The city is said to have been founded by Lord Shiva. Regarded as the Spiritual Capital of India, Varanasi is one of the seven holy cities (Sapta Puri). Flanked by hundreds of ghats (steps) along the Ganges River, it is here that you witness the daily rituals of people. Different ceremonies are performed on the different ghats from Varanasi from daily ablutions, pujas, meditation, yoga and cremations. Perhaps the most documented occasion to experience at Varanasi is the Ganga Aarti which takes place every evening on Dashashwamedh Ghat. The ghat glows in mellow tones of orange as priests perform the aarti.
